Earthquake pressure in Cajon Pass is a new cause of tension – Daily Bulletin

The Cajon Pass is under historic levels of stress, and not because of angry commuters on Interstate 15. The pass is the junction of the San Andreas and San Jacinto earthquake fault lines, which were quiet. Pretty quiet, in horror movie terms.

“Tectonic stress has continued to build along these faults, increasing the likelihood of a major rupture in the future. One major area of ​​concern is the Cajon Corridor, where two fault systems meet and could rupture together,” according to a study published in the News.

Scientists in Hawaii, Pasadena and La Jolla, taking a break from enjoying life in their paradises, used computer simulations of seismic activity over the past 1,000 years to figure out how fault stress develops.

In other words, they looked at the region as far back as the year 1100. The last major earthquakes at this point were the Wrightwood earthquake in 1812 and the Fort Tejon earthquake in 1857. The study concluded that the lack of a major earthquake since then indicates that “the system is under severe stress.”

In fact, the last time the Cajon Corridor approached its current level of tension was in 1249, just before the midterm elections. I mean, right before the earthquake happened.

How should we react to this alarming news? Granted, the “big event” might happen today, perhaps during lunch, but hopefully it will happen before the bill arrives. But it may also not happen in our lifetime.

Another reason to take a deep breath is this. The report predicts that the Cajon Corridor is a kind of traffic policeman between the two earthquake faults. In the past thousand years, five ruptures have been limited to the San Andreas and four to the San Jacinto.

“This suggests that the Cajon Corridor could act as an ‘earthquake gateway,’ sometimes blocking and other times allowing large cracks to propagate between faults,” the report says. The report calls these two events the “open gate” and the “closed gate.”

The most recent earthquake, in 1857, was “gate-locked” and caused no damage “south of Cajon Pass.” Good news if you live in San Bernardino, bad news if you live in Hesperia.

This study seems too big, literally, to spend energy worrying about. It’s fun to talk about, though. The Los Angeles Times ran this headline: “The San Andreas Fault has gone ominously silent. Scientists fear when it will finally explode.”

It’s as if San Andreas’ fault is that legendary, self-possessed neighbor about whom we will one day say in wonder: “Oh my God, he looked so quiet.”

The head of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History testified last week before a House Oversight subcommittee. In the wake of a critical White House report, some GOP members said the museum was not waving the flag strongly enough.

The director in question is Anthea M. Hartig, who was born and raised in Rancho Cucamonga, earned her master’s and doctorate degrees from UC Riverside, and began her career in the City of Riverside Planning Department and at La Sierra University.

Hartig went on to serve as director of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the California Historical Society before being appointed director of the National Museum of American History in 2018.

The first woman to hold this position is also the first woman to hail from the Inland Empire. This means that Anthea Hartig, among a long list of other accomplishments, is almost certainly the first Smithsonian director to be introduced to Baker’s Drive-Thru.

The last day for Joey’s Bar-BQ in Chino is Sunday, July 26. Founders Ray and Lauria Moores, who met in Texas, launched their restaurant on June 28, 1978, in a building on the city’s west end near two egg farms.

They named the restaurant after their little boy, Joey.

I’ve eaten at Joey’s in Chino several times over the years. My friends and I were partial to the former Joey’s branch in downtown Pomona. This is where we celebrated birthdays or had dinner before shows in the greenhouse. There were also locations in Rancho Cucamonga and Upland.

I went to the original, and now only, Joey’s for a farewell lunch on Thursday, before a replacement restaurant, Eli Joe’s BBQ Market, took over. There’s no crazy rush or line out the door on recent days, surprisingly, so I had a place to sit right away and had a pleasant experience.

While eating lunch, I learned that the story had a twist.

Joey is transferred to his namesake, Joseph Moores. Joey and his wife, Melanie, will name the new restaurant after their son, just as the original restaurant was named after him.

First comes renewal. And then the tradition will continue.
