Mexican earthquake triggers ‘desert tsunami’ in Death Valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A strong earthquake earlier this week in Mexico sent waves four feet high into Death Valley’s Devil’s Hole. The earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, was centered about a hundred miles southeast of Guadalajara.

The quake struck at 11:05 a.m. PT on Monday and took 22 minutes to impact the waters of Devil’s Hole in Death Valley National Park.

The park service said waves inside Devils’ Pit were about four feet in height. Devils Hole is a limestone cave hundreds of feet deep that is home to the endangered, algae-dependent Devils Hole fish that grows on a shallow sunlit shelf.

These last waves were to be expected as the team was on hand to record the flickering on camera.

“Puppet fish have survived many of these events in recent years,” said Kevin Wilson, an aquatic ecologist with the National Park Service. “We didn’t find any dead fish after the waves stopped.”

Nine years ago, there were only 35 fish pups counted in the water, but in March of this year, scientists counted 175 fish.

Monday’s waves stirred up sediment and rocks on the shallow escarpment, according to the park service, and removed much of the algae growth. In the short term, this reduces the food available to the bellfish.
