‘Strong earthquake’: 5.8 Marlboro quake was felt in Wellington, across central New Zealand

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake was felt in Wellington and throughout central New Zealand.

Newstalk reporter Nick James called it a “good shake”.

According to the GeoNet website, tonight’s earthquake measured a magnitude of 5.8. It struck 30 km northeast of the French Corridor at 9.07 pm at a depth of 51 km.

The GeoNet website reported that more than 44,500 people had felt the quake by 9.50 p.m., and 44 of them reported “severe” tremors.

Geonet called it a “strong earthquake”.

“Maybe you felt this earthquake! It was caused by the M5.8 earthquake in the Marlborough area. It was rather deep and was felt in a wide area – typical of earthquakes of this size and depth. It caused a strong shaking and received about 44,000 hairs,” Geonet said.

A Wellington Fire and Emergency spokesman felt the quake, saying, “It got stronger and then faded.” I thought it lasted less than a minute.

A passenger on an Air New Zealand flight from Auckland scheduled to land in Wellington at 9.10pm tweeted that the plane had been diverted to Christchurch after originally flying while checking the capital’s runway for damage.

A woman named Bernice, from Lower Hut, was talking to Marcus Loach on Newstalk ZB during the earthquake.

“It was a roar and then a bang. It’s over now,” she told Loach, looking in disbelief at first.

Sue Dodman of the Whanganui Chronicle reports “a lot of noise and rock ‘n’ roll” in the city.

GeoNet says on its website that the earthquake may have been felt in “Blenheim, Castle Point, Cheviot, Collingwood, Culverden, Danevirk, Equitahuna, Fielding, French Pass, Hanmer Springs, Hastings, Huera, Hunterville, Kaikoura, Karamia, Levin, Martinborough Masterton, Mokao, Motweka, Murchison, Napier, Nelson, New Plymouth, Ohakoni, Obonak, Palmerston North, Paraparaumu, Picton, Bongarua, Burangao, Rifton, Seddon, St. Arno, Stratford, Taipei, Taumarunui, Tablebo, Turangi, Westport and Wellington and Whanganui and surrounding localities”.

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake occurred 110 kilometers northeast of Wangamata at 4.28 pm today, GeoNet reported.

“The depth of the quake was 225 km and the tremor was weak near the quake,” GeoNet said of the quake.

“People may have felt the earthquake in Opoteki, Tauranga, Te Aroha, Te Kaha, Thames, Wakari/White Island, Wakatani, Wangamata, Witianga, and the surrounding localities.”
