South Kona earthquake recovery updates and assistance information is available at the community meeting: Big Island Now

A community meeting to provide residents with updates on recovery efforts and assistance available following the May 22 earthquake that struck South Kona will be held on Thursday, July 16 in Captain Cook.

Representatives from Hawaii County Civil Defense, along with other governmental and non-governmental partners, will discuss recovery resources and ongoing efforts to secure additional assistance for residents and businesses affected by the earthquake.

The 6.0 magnitude earthquake, whose epicenter was near Hōnaunau-Nāpōʻopoʻo, led to widespread reports of damage throughout the region. According to Hawaii County Civil Defense, the agency has received more than 540 reports of residential damage since the earthquake.

Federal, county and state inspection teams evaluated 313 homes over several weeks to document damage and support requests for potential federal disaster assistance. Officials said 92 homes were seriously damaged, while 18 were destroyed.

The earthquake also caused significant agricultural losses.

Officials documented hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, most of it attributed to extensive damage to water systems serving farms and agricultural operations.

Residents who experienced property damage associated with the earthquake or other impacts are still encouraged to report their needs.

The meeting is scheduled for 6-7:30 p.m. on July 16 at Sgt. Rodney J. T. Yano Memorial Hall, 82-6156 Mamalahua Highway in Captain Cook.

Homeowners and residents can report residential property damage online or by calling Hawaii County Civil Defense at 808-935-0031. Officials added that those who report residential damage will be notified if additional assistance is available and will be provided with information on how to apply.

Agricultural producers can report damage by calling the USDA Farm Service Agency at 808-933-8334.

Residents who need further assistance, including debris removal or shelter, can submit a request through Vibrant Hawaiʻi’s assistance form or call Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense at 808-935-0031.
