Mexican earthquake causes 4-foot waves in Death Valley National Park – 1,500 miles away

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Mexico’s Pacific coast on Monday, leaving at least two people dead in its wake. The aftermath of the quake stretched as far as 1,500 miles north, as four-foot waves began to ripple inside a Death Valley cave called Devils Hole, in what the National Park Service called an “astounding geological aberration.”

Video footage of the phenomenon — technically known as an earthquake, when sudden changes are observed in a lake or partially closed body of water — shows a panoramic view of the cave as its initially still water explodes in a series of waves that sways and shatters intermittently over the course of several minutes.

Devils Hole is a geothermal pool inside a limestone cave, located in a portion of Death Valley near the Nevada and California border. The cave itself is hundreds of feet deep, the park service noted in a press release explaining the “desert tsunami” recorded late Monday morning, but the relatively shallow water level is critical to the endangered marine species, called pupfish, that live there.

The fish, which had a normal population of just 175 earlier this year, feeds on algae “that grows on a shallow sunlit shelf” in Devils Hole, according to the park service.

Since the sesh on Monday removed the algae that was growing in the cave, it would reduce the food supply of the young fish in the short term. But Kevin Wilson, the federal agency’s aquatic ecologist, has suggested that the creatures may be resilient enough to withstand a temporary shift in their environment.

“The little fish has survived many of these events in recent years,” Wilson said in a statement. “We didn’t find any dead fish after the waves stopped.” The park service said an annual puppy count is scheduled to be held inside Devils Hole this weekend.

Monday’s earthquake was the first of two strong earthquakes to rock Mexico this week. The second earthquake occurred near the capital, Mexico City, early Thursday. It gave an initial strength of 6.8 and killed at least one person while causing buildings to sway.
