Palos Verdes fault stretching along the coast of Los Angeles, OC can cause devastating earthquake

A new study from Harvard University suggests that the Palos Verdes fault, which runs along the coasts of Los Angeles and Orange County, could trigger a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake — similar in size to the one that the San Andreas threat could unleash. Error.

Although scientists have known about the bug’s existence for years, the study announces that what they believe is a new revelation could be the deciding factor in what unleashes “The Big One.”

The Palos Verdes fault line runs directly under the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and although it is mostly underwater, it does lie under places like Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills Estates, Long Beach, and Los Angeles Harbors. The approximately 70-mile line runs from Dana Point to Santa Monica Bay.

According to the study, the fault may in fact be made up of an interconnected series of smaller faults, which can produce a massive earthquake, larger than the deadly and devastating 6.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Northridge in 1997.

“What this study did, is we think that these multiple filaments can build up as if they were individual filaments and make them really long, and it’s the length of the fault that determines how big the magnitude is,” said Dr. Lucy Jones, a well-known seismologist.

As is usual in the moments after earth-shaking news emerged, the immediate concerns that came with the announcement of the study’s result were allayed.

“It’s not on the risk map,” she said. These are two scientists who said, “This is how we think it works,” noting that one factor that people should consider is the slip rate of the fault, or how quickly the two sides of the fault slip relative to each other. “If there really are these earthquakes, they are rare, and this study didn’t reduce slip rates at all from 1 to 6 mil which is a very large range.”

The USGS will review the study and determine whether it will be included in the findings when it updates the state’s hazard maps in 2025.

Hazard maps show areas of concern, such as those with volcanoes or prone to earthquakes and landslides. The last update was in 2019.
