A 5.3 magnitude earthquake hits the southeastern island of Plitara

TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA – An earthquake of 5.3 magnitude struck the Blitar District in East Java Province on Sunday at around 02:09 AM local time, but it did not cause a tsunami.

The epicenter of the earthquake is about 129 km southeast of Blitar, at a depth of 79 km, according to the Jakarta-based Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

Residents of Karangkats, Triangalik, Naganjok, Basitan and Jember in East Java province also felt the earthquakes that struck the city, where the tomb of the founding father of Indonesia Soekarno is located.

Tremors may also be felt by residents of several regions of the Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces, including Kulonbrojo, Bantul, Selakkap and Wonogiri.
