The National Day of Resilience was celebrated to commemorate the October 8 earthquake

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Regional Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in collaboration with the GLOF-II project sponsored by the Green Climate Fund implemented by UNDP, Federal Ministry of Climate Change and Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday celebrated “National Resilience Day” at Shahid Benazir Bhutto University, Chiringal , Upper Monastery in memory of the martyrs of the October 8, 2005 earthquake.

The aim of the event was to express solidarity with the bereaved families who lost their members on the 8th of October.

Representatives from PDMA, UNDP GLOF-II Officer, Vice-Chancellor, Registrar Shahid Benazir Bhutto University, Shringal, representative humanitarian organizations, academia, a large number of students along with representatives from international NGOs, and Rescue 1122, and civil defense representatives. .

Assistant Commissioner Chiringal Muhammed Yar welcomed the participants and highlighted the resentment memories of past disasters, disasters not only affect human lives but seriously damage the social and economic fabric of the country. He thanked PDMA Project KP and GLOF 2 for choosing this area and briefed the public on relief activities during the recent floods and rains.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Director of Disaster Risk Management Muhammad Javed said that in the 2005 earthquake, the northern parts of the province were badly damaged. Muzaffarabad was the worst-hit area mainly because the epicenter was only 19 kilometers (12 miles) to the northeast.

The observance of this day also aims to create awareness among stakeholders on disaster risk reduction and disaster risk management.

The authority also intends to engage all stakeholders to make Khyber Pakhtunkhwa disaster-resilient. He added that risks and uncertainties are increasing in the region due to climate change, increased frequency of extreme weather events, maximum and minimum temperature extremes, and increased occurrence of temperature-induced disasters and pests.

The world in general and Pakistan in particular is suffering from climate change. He said that due to the uneven distribution of monsoon rains, floods and famines are the fate of this region. In addition to these hazards, GLOF is another emerging phenomenon, particularly observed in the Chitral region (it has an ice cover of 4000 km2, which is the second largest ice reserve in Pakistan after GB).

GLOF incidents have posed some serious threats and challenges to mountain communities in remote areas in recent times.

He added that many residents of our province today live in areas prone to earthquakes and disasters, and many communities are vulnerable to hurricanes and other extreme weather events. If we are going to defeat climate change and address its effects, we need to work together. PDMA is doing its best to achieve resilience goal in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Director General PDMA said in a letter that the phenomenon of natural disasters cannot be stopped but can be reduced through disaster risk reduction measures. As a nation there is a need to assume ownership and be prepared for any volunteer work. He further said that PDMA, in its proactive role, is taking steps to eliminate or manage disaster risks before they lead to disaster.

In this regard, actions are taken in the areas of risk assessment, mitigation and preparedness. The observance of National Resilience Day is an occasion to assess and affirm the commitment to greater preparedness to avoid or respond to natural disasters and by demonstrating determination to reduce disaster risk. He further stressed that we need to reduce disaster risk through prevention and mitigation as well as preparedness.

In order to enhance the ability to deal with disasters such as the earthquake, the GLOF mock drill exercise and other natural disasters were conducted in collaboration with Rescue 1122 including community members.

PDMA spokesperson KP Taimur Ali said the series of activities planned for October.
