Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes southern Halmahera

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit South Halmahera in North Maluku Province on Sunday morning, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The agency stated on its social networking site that the epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 04.12 WIB, was on land, about 144 kilometers northeast of south Halmahera at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The agency said the earthquake was not likely to cause a tsunami.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or injuries.

Indonesia is located on the Ring of Fire along the northeastern islands bordering New Guinea and the Alpide belt along the south and west of Sumatra, Java, Bali, Flores and Timor.
