A study shows that an asteroid killing dinosaurs also caused a huge earthquake

Dinosaur kills asteroid, Chicxulub Collider: The extinction of the dinosaurs occurred when a 10-kilometre asteroid hit Earth about 66 million years ago, according to the Geological Society of America (GSA). Pellets are sediment layers filled with tiny glass beads smaller than 1.1 mm and fragments known as ‘tektites’ and ‘microtectites’. These bits and glass beads were ejected into the atmosphere during an asteroid impact. Formed when heat and pressure from the collision melted and dispersed the Earth’s crust.

The globules and tekles on the coast of Gorgonilla Island give clues as to what happened on the sea floor nearly two kilometers underwater at the time of the impact. When the Chicxulub asteroid hit Earth, layers of mud and sandstone distorted up to 15 meters below the ocean floor. According to Bermudez’s research, this was preserved in the outcrops due to the earthquake caused by the impact.

Defects and deformation caused by vibration persist through the ball-filled layer deposited after impact. This indicates that the shaking should have continued for the weeks and months that it took for these fine-grained sediments to reach the ocean floor. Above the globular sediments, preserved fern spores indicate the first recovery of plant life after the impact.

This evidence of deformation from the massive earthquake is also present in Mexico and the United States. Bermudez documented faults and fissures likely associated with the major earthquakes in Mississippi, Alabama, and Texas. He also documented tsunami deposits in many of these outcrops, which were left by a massive wave caused by the impact.
