An earthquake occurred near Sykesville, Maryland, on Tuesday night

A small earthquake occurred near the town of Sykesville, north of Maryland, on Tuesday evening. The epicenter was about 20 miles west of Baltimore and 30 miles north of Washington.

The USGS reported that the weak earthquake was rated on the Richter scale 2, and that it occurred at a depth of 3.1 miles.

Hundreds of people reported feeling the quake that struck at 11:49 p.m. All but one of the reports to the USGS rated the shaking as “weak”. This is the lowest vibration rating on a scale that spans nine categories, peaking at “very heavy”.

While most reports of shaking were within a few miles of the epicenter, the shaking was felt as far away as the Front Royal and Chantilly regions. It has also been observed within the Beltway in Annandale, Bethesda, and Silver Spring.

WTOP relayed some calls to 911 Howard County residents who “heard or felt a bang.”

There were no reports of damage. “Damage does not usually occur until the magnitude of the earthquake is somewhere above 4 or 5,” the USGS wrote. Whether a weak earthquake causes damage depends on the type of soil and other local factors.

The late-night earthquake was the first to hit the area since August 18, 2021, when a magnitude 1.7 struck near Woodlawn in the Baltimore suburbs. Throughout the broader Washington-Baltimore region, one earthquake of this intensity may be expected annually. It is also common for several years to go without a year.
