Earthquake Safety Practice in Oregon | Sweetened

Half a million Oregonians are expected to participate in the Great Oregon Shakeout Drill on October 20 at 10:20 a.m., according to the Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM).

“Taking this measure of drop, cover, and hold will save lives during an earthquake,” said Andrew Phelps, CEO of the OEM. “It’s important for people to have that muscle memory and to understand that this is what you should do as soon as you feel the ground shaking from under you.”

It’s not about whether an earthquake will strike…it’s about when it will happen, says Phelps in Oregon. For example, Klamath County is considered a high-risk area for earthquakes. On September 20, 1993, the county was hit by two earthquakes that killed two people. On Friday, October 7, Lin County was hit by a 4.4-magnitude earthquake.

“A good reminder that earthquakes can happen here in Oregon and of course we have the looming threat of an offshore Cascadia subduction earthquake that will be devastating,” Phelps said. “Not just for Oregon, but for the Pacific Northwest and the nation already.”

Phelps referred to “The Big One,” a 7.8 magnitude earthquake expected to devastate the Pacific Northwest. He said earthquakes can’t come anywhere, which is why it’s important to know what to do when one hits.

The Medford School District conducts earthquake drills twice a year and plans to implement a new vibration warning system.

“Preparation is how we prepare for the unknown,” said Ron Hafnier, executive director of facilities, security, and leadership at MSD. “Our training, awareness, staff, and students’ confidence to be able to respond appropriately and be safe increases their ability to provide for themselves and their continued survival.”
