SCVNews.com | Big Crowd celebrates 150 years of school in Canyon County

The sounds of children and food trucks filled their stomachs on Saturday as several hundred students, parents, alumni and teachers gathered at Sulfur Springs Community School to celebrate 150 years of primary education in Canyon Country.

“It really is a weekend homecoming to the district,” Dennis Diffigerido, head of the school board, told the crowd, noting that Ulysses S. Grant was the boss when it all started “seven points and 10 years ago.”

“Our students (then) become leaders in their communities as they choose careers in business, technology, science, arts, education, crafts, medicine, law, and public service as first responders and in local and national government,” he said. “Our little corner of the world at Canyon Country has made a really good impact all over the world.”

Organized over several months by a volunteer committee and dispatched by District Superintendent Dr. Catherine Kawaguchi, the official event included depictions of the living history of house leader Thomas F. Mitchell and performances by choirs from Sulfur Springs, Mitchell, Valley View, Leona Cox and Canyon Springs Schools.

The museum’s 150-year exhibition spanned either side of the classroom’s portico and set the stage for historic day. Children from across the Sulfur Springs Union School District dated back to the 1870s as they moved from stall to stall with hands-on activities such as rope making, gold digging, doll making, stick games and laundry.

A time capsule filled with memorabilia and recent news snippets has been prepared to show what life in Canyon Country has been like “on the way back in 2022.”

Saturday’s event was supposed to include the opening of a similar capsule that was buried 25 years ago, but no one can remember where it was planted. The campus has changed dramatically since then; There is now a new and permanent building where the main part of the bicentennial celebration took place in 1997.

A century ago there was a place called Canyon Country, education in the area began in 1872 when Martha Mitchell began educating her own children and neighbors within the Mitchell family home in what is now the Vista Canyon Ranch development. A copy of the tiny adobe house is now found across town in the Heritage Junction section of William S. Hart Park.

Within two years, the education moved to the Sulfur Springs hotel next door to the Lang family. The building is located near the actual “sulfur sprinkling” – a natural occurrence of the smelly mineral water in the Santa Clarita River whose health benefits the Lange family proclaimed.

By 1879, there were enough school-age children in the district to meet the state’s requirement—nine pupils—to form a school district. According to the late historian AB Perkins, those nine children – actually 10 – included four Mitchells, four Lange, and two Stewarts.

The enrollment of 17 young men from eight different families in 1885 put too much pressure on any family home, so the Mitchell family is said to have donated a school site. A proper one-room school grew up on the site of today’s Silver Springs Community School. He served wonderfully for 55 years when he finally needed a second room. The school board erected a new two-room schoolhouse with stucco walls in 1940, and the old one-room school became a lumber shop. Florence Mitchell taught in one room, and Geneve Dietrich in the other.

Thus were the humble beginnings of the Sulfur Springs Union School District, which now has nine campuses and a total enrollment of 5,200. The “union” in the name refers to the unification of two or more counties; Sulfur Springs absorbed the formerly separate Mint Canyon School District in 1944.
