What we know about the San Jose earthquake today
Story at a Glance The 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near San Jose late Tuesday morning. The quake is the largest in the area since 2014 and local authorities say they have no reports of damage or injuries.
An earthquake occurred near San Jose late Tuesday morning, causing tremors to residents of Silicon Valley and the Bay Area, though apparently not causing significant damage.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported a 5.1-magnitude earthquake about nine miles east of Seven Trees, California at 11:42 a.m. local time.
The agency reported that the shaking extended for hundreds of square miles, and recorded as far west as Nevada and as south as Santa Paula, California.
“Additional aftershocks can be expected in the area,” the California Geological Survey wrote on Twitter. “We are continuing to monitor this area.”
The USGS recorded a second earthquake of magnitude 2.9 near five minutes after the initial report.
The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services indicated that they were assessing any initial damage, but local authorities reported minor effects.
“We are pleased to report that there were no emergency calls related to this morning’s earthquake,” the San Jose Fire Department wrote on Twitter.
Similarly, the San Jose Police Department said it had not received any reports of damage or injuries.
Northern California is no stranger to earthquakes.
The state government reports that California generally gets between two and three earthquakes each year large enough to cause moderate structural damage, measured as any earthquake of magnitude 5.5 or higher.
But seismologist Lucy Jones noted that Tuesday’s quake was the largest in the Bay Area since 2014, when a 6.0-magnitude quake struck near Napa, California, which is north of San Francisco.
Tuesday’s earthquake occurred along the Calaveras Fault, a branch of the San Andreas Fault, which extends approximately 750 miles across California along the boundary between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates.
The Calaveras Fault has caused multiple earthquakes in recent decades, including the 1984 Morgan Hill earthquake, which recorded a magnitude of 6.2, and a magnitude 5.6 earthquake near Alum Rock, California, in 2007.
