Remember the hero of the Turkish-Japanese earthquake

Atsushi Miyazaki is fondly remembered before the anniversary of an earthquake in Turkey that killed a young Japanese volunteer who was in the country helping survivors of an earlier disaster.

Miyazaki won the hearts of survivors alike before his death, with his relief work in Turkey’s eastern Van province, which was shaken by an earthquake in October 2011. The second doctor with a magnitude of 5.6 was killed on November 9. , 2011, with several other people buried under the ruins of their hotel.

“He had a lot to do” before the anniversary of his death, said Otsuka Asako, a fellow Miyazaki with Aid and Relief Association (AAR Japan).

Miyazaki came to the rescue of earthquake victims in Van Prefecture after being hit by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake. The second earthquake caused his hotel to collapse into rubble, and Miyazaki, who was badly injured, was pulled from the wreckage pile after extensive rescue operations but succumbed to his injuries in hospital. With his smiling face and his relief activities, he is still remembered by locals today as an “earthquake hero”. Every year, it is so celebrated in the county that many streets, schools, parks, and roads are named after him.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Otsuka Asako said Miyazaki was a humble and cheerful man who never complained. “I remember him smiling before he embarked on his trip to Turkey and entrusted us with office work here in Tokyo. He liked to keep a low profile and when others praised his charitable work, he downplayed it all the time. I am sure he would continue to work here if he survived.”
