The impact of toxic air pollution on children living near a BP oil field in southern Iraq has been revealed in a BBC investigation. Gas flaring is the term for burning gas in oil production. Working with environmental scientists, a BBC team measured benzene in the air in communities near four different oilfields with high levels of gas retention, including Rumaila. The study also analyzed the children’s urine samples to see if there were detectable toxins associated with gassing. BP, which operates the Rumaila oil field, took record profits from Rumaila last year amid a year of record profits and is calling for an income tax extension to tackle the cost-of-living crisis. The BBC established that it was the most gassing site in the world. The companies said their reporting method was standard industry practice.
