Officials say the powerful West Texas quake was felt hundreds of miles away

A powerful earthquake rocked a sparsely populated area of ​​the West Texas desert on Thursday, causing tremors as far away as the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez.

The quake, which initially had a magnitude of 5.3, struck around 3:30 p.m., according to Jim DeBerry, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Midland. The USGS later tweeted that the magnitude of the quake was 5.4.

The strength of the quake means it likely caused damage to the oil patch and outlying trees, Deberry said, but nothing has been reported yet.

DeBerry said the epicenter was about 23 miles south of Menton, a small area south of the New Mexico state line and about 400 miles west of Dallas.

State Rep. Eddie Morales Jr., whose county includes Mentone, said he has spoken with local authorities and there have been no reports of injuries. He said via Twitter that state officials would “inspect roads, bridges and other infrastructure as a precautionary measure”.

DeBerry said there have been reports of people feeling vibrations from the quake 200 miles west in the border city of Ciudad Juarez and as far south as Terlingua, a small community near Rio Grande and Big Bend National Parks.

The USGS told KUT the quake was one of the largest in the state’s history, and added that the agency had received reports of a tremor in Austin. The agency’s geophysicist, Jonathan Teitel, told the radio station that the quake was most likely caused by oil and gas activity.

The quake was also felt in parts of San Antonio, according to news reports.
