At least 62 people have been killed and 700 injured after a powerful earthquake hits Indonesia

At least 62 people were killed and nearly 700 injured after a strong earthquake jolted West Java, Indonesia, on Monday.

Ridwan Kamil, the governor of West Java, confirmed the death toll of 62 people. The epicenter was the town of Cianjur, 75 km southeast of the capital, Jakarta. There was no danger of a tsunami. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.6 on the Richter scale.

The national disaster agency, whose data lagged behind local officials on the ground Monday, told a news conference that up to 700 people have been injured and more than 300 homes have been damaged or destroyed.

Reuters news agency said the quake was so strong that people rushed to leave apartments and offices.

The head of BMKG’s geophysics agency, Dwikorita Karnawati, told reporters at Parliament House to stay outdoors in case of aftershocks.

According to officials, the earthquake caused a minor landslide Cianjur. While two trapped people were rescued, a third could not survive.

“We managed to evacuate a woman and a child alive, but the other one died. This is the only thing I can share now,” Cianjur Police Chief Doni Hermawan was quoted by AFP news agency as saying.

Another BMKG official, Sukko Prayitno Ade, said authorities were checking the extent of the damage from the quake.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake as a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale.
