Damage to buildings and power outages after the earthquakes that hit the Solomon Islands | Solomon Islands

Buildings were damaged and widespread power outages were reported in Honiara, the capital of Solomon Island, after two earthquakes struck off the southwest coast on Tuesday.

The first earthquake of magnitude 7.0 briefly triggered a tsunami warning from the USGS, but that warning was withdrawn soon after.

A second earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck 30 minutes later.

The Solomon Islands and Honiara Power Outages Broadcasting Corporation said in a statement that all radio services were down.

The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, said the roof of the Australian High Commission building in Honiara had collapsed, “suggesting possible damage across the city”.

“We have called Prime Minister Sogavare to signal again that Australia is ready to help.”

All Australian High Commission staff were safe, Albanese said, but confirming the safety of all Australians in the Solomon Islands had been difficult because of the communications breakdown.

The US Geological Survey said the quake, which occurred near Malango, was shallow at a depth of 10 km.

People reported violent shaking that threw televisions and other items to the floor.

Freelance journalist Charlie Berenji said he was standing outside a warehouse next to a primary and secondary school on the outskirts of the capital, Honiara, when the earthquake struck, sending children running.

He said, “The earthquake shook the place.” “It was huge. We were all shocked, everyone running everywhere.”

The country’s attorney general, John Morea, posted photos on social media of office files spilling out of large metal filing cabinets.

“This was a big one,” Joy Nisha, a receptionist at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara, told AFP. “Some things fell off in the hotel. Everyone seems to be fine, but they are terrified.”

An AFP correspondent in the capital said the tremor lasted about 20 seconds.
