Casualties after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake strikes western Turkey | Earthquake news

Authorities said 35 people were injured, mostly in the panic that followed the quake.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck western Turkey, while the country’s interior minister said there were no immediate reports of deaths or major damage.

MSC said the quake occurred at a depth of two kilometres.

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), which measured the quake at a magnitude of 5.9, said the epicenter was in Juliaca district in the northwestern province of Duzce.

Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter that 35 people were infected in Duzce and neighboring provinces.

Disaster and Emergency Management and later media reports updated the number of injured to 50.

Most of the casualties occurred during the post-earthquake panic, including from jumping from balconies or windows. Soylu said one of the injured was in serious condition.

The quake occurred at 4:08 am (01:08 GMT) and Turkish media said people also felt it in Istanbul and the capital, Ankara.

Dozens of aftershocks were reported, including aftershocks with a magnitude of 4.3.

Haberturk TV reported that the quake destroyed the exterior cladding and parts of the roof of a courthouse in Duzce. Among other damages, it added, a two-storey shop on a narrow street collapsed.

Television footage in Golkaya showed people gathering in a main square, some wrapped in blankets distributed by the Emergency Management Agency.

About 800 people were killed in a powerful earthquake that struck Duzce on November 12, 1999. In August of that year, 17,000 people were killed in another powerful earthquake that devastated the nearby province of Kocaeli and other parts of northwest Turkey.

Officials said about 80 percent of the buildings in the area were rebuilt or fortified following the 1999 earthquake, which helped minimize damage.
