Kalgoorlie-Boulder records a 3.0-magnitude earthquake a few days after the goldfield miners panicked

Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents awoke with fear after two earthquakes struck in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The first, a 3.0-magnitude earthquake occurred after 1 am at a depth of 4.02 km, and the second was felt around 1.15 am and had a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale.

Locals took to Facebook to share their experience, with one saying “I felt the first feeling bigger than 3.0,” while another said they’d “slept through both.”

It comes just days after BHP disclosed that it had lost contact with a number of underground miners after an earthquake hit the Nickel West site near Leinster, 370km northwest of Kalgoorlie.

The 3.5 seismic event, which occurred in the Goldfields area around 3.24pm on Wednesday, has seen mass power outages and a loss of communication with underground staff.

A company spokesperson later confirmed that the miners were all safe and unharmed.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our people,” they said.

“In line with our normal operations, operations will resume once the safety tests are completed.”

No major damage or injuries have been reported since the Kalgoorlie earthquake.
