Ischia mudslide: seven dead, five missing after mudslides engulf an Italian city

The death toll from mudslides on the Italian island of Ischia has risen to seven.

A wave of mud and debris from heavy rain swept through the small town of Casamicciola Terme in the north of the island – just off the coast from Naples – early Saturday morning.

By Sunday evening, the Italian government had declared a state of emergency in Ischia, where five people were still missing.

Earlier, search teams retrieved the body of a young girl from her family’s house as they dug through the mud for the second day.

The Italian press also reported that 13 people were injured.

The prefect of Naples said some of the people initially reported missing have finally been found safe, including a family with a newborn baby.

The search was complicated by persistent rain and high winds, which also delayed the arrival of reinforcements by ferry from the mainland.

More than 200 emergency workers joined in the search for the missing, while hundreds of volunteers, slick with mud, cleaned the streets of the small town.

The remains of cars and buses crushed by a mudslide and rockslide can be seen everywhere as excavators try to open access to homes, cars and shops.

Civil Protection Minister Nilo Musumechi said a first emergency package of 2 million euros was also agreed upon at an extraordinary government meeting on Sunday.
