BPBD: Buildings and schools in Jakarta must be earthquake resistant

Jakarta (Antara) – The Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has urged that high-rise buildings and schools being built in the capital should be earthquake-resistant to minimize harmful impacts.

“We must monitor buildings (including) high-rises and others,” Jakarta’s Acting President BBBDP Isnawa Aji said here on Tuesday.

In the supervision of buildings to be able to resist earthquakes, BPBD will cooperate with the Jakarta Integrated Integrated Services Service Center for Investment (DPMPTSP), with the aim of issuing a permit for earthquake-resistant buildings that can already be achieved in the center.

These efforts were reinforced after the earthquake that shook Cianjur, West Java, on November 21 was felt by people in Jakarta.

In dealing with disasters, Aji said his side will cooperate with relevant parties, including the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

“The important point is that we want Jakarta to be resilient to disasters,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Acting Governor of Jakarta Hiro Budi Hartono explained that the provincial government will hold a meeting of leaders, with a focus on earthquake mitigation, especially with regard to the resistance of school buildings.

In the plan, many school buildings in Jakarta will be rehabilitated or completely renovated to make them earthquake resistant.

Earlier, earthquake and tsunami expert Danny Hillman Natawidjaja of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) said that earthquake-resistant buildings are an important part of preparing for earthquake shocks.

“One of the ways to mitigate earthquake shocks is to implement earthquake-resistant building construction with appropriate structures,” Ntawidjaja noted during a virtual discussion on Friday (December 23).

He said the possibility of damage during an earthquake can be reduced if all building structures in Indonesia, including houses, follow the guidelines in the earthquake zoning map and earthquake-resistant structure standard included in National Standard SNI 1726:2019.
