6.4 earthquake breaks Humboldt briefly

HUMBOLDT – Humboldt County is still counting the damage from the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that rattled and shook the North Coast during the early morning hours of Tuesday, December 20th.

The most severe damage occurred in the Eel River Valley communities of Rio Del and Ferndale.

“At least 17 injuries have been reported as a result of the earthquake,” a press release from the sheriff’s office said. “As previously mentioned, two elderly persons with pre-existing conditions died as a result of medical emergencies that occurred during and/or immediately after the earthquake. Their conditions are believed to have been exacerbated by the stress of the earthquake.”

The quake occurred at 2:34 a.m. west of Ferndale. Multiple aftershocks followed – 4.6 at 2:41 a.m. near Rio Del, with a magnitude at 5:57 a.m. west of Indianola, 4.0 at 7:13 a.m. northeast of Headsville, 4.2 at 2:09 p.m. near Ferndale, and 4.3 at 2:11. p.m. near Ferndale and 4.1 at 5:11 p.m. west of Ferndale.

The earthquake knocked out power to much of the county, leaving about 70,000 Pacific Gas & Electric customers in the dark.

Local supermarkets quickly sold out of everything from firewood to flashlight batteries.

Most of the agents regained their strength later that evening.

While there was a lot of broken glass and some structural damage in North Humboldt, the bulk of the damage was in Rio Del and Ferndale, where dozens, homes and buildings were red flagged.

In Rio Del, about 3,400 residents did not have water. Those who did so were advised to boil the water.
