Earthquake Relief | Residents turn to GoFundMe to recover – Times-Standard

As earthquake relief efforts continue, some residents have asked for donations to help them get over their homes and the severe damage to their livelihoods.

Several GoFundMe accounts have been set up to help provide additional aid to people affected by the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that injured 17, knocked out power, destroyed homes, and killed two in its aftermath.

Reno resident Jessie Dunbar started a GoFundMe for her parents, Jamie and Ben Cohoon, whose home was badly damaged and slipped from his foundation.

“Their chimney is out, and now they have a six-by-six-foot hole in the living room wall, which was their only source of heat, and now they have no heat,” Dunbar said.

The Cohon house was marked yellow, Dunbar said, meaning it was still habitable albeit in need of repair, so her parents stayed there and put up with the cold until they could fix the house. Just for chimney and foundation repairs, the Cohon family, who have no insurance, are looking to pay $50,000.

They had other possessions that were lost in the Dixie fire last year, and Dunbar said she hopes her parents can get some help.

For Rio Del resident Jeff Ball, his rental home was so badly damaged that authorities put a red flag on it, meaning he couldn’t enter to recover an estimated $10,000 in property, let alone sentimental items.

“(My housing plans) are kind of up in the air, I’m trying to save up some money so I can pay deposits and rent and what I’ve just spent the last few weeks trying to make up,” Paul said.

Paul’s GoFundMe, started by a family friend, will help pay for housing, as he currently resides at his aunt’s house in Eureka. His 13-year-old daughter, Tessa, is staying with her mother in Arcata while Paul finds a new home.

Another GoFundMe was set up for Rio Del resident Felicity Turcotte, whose home was damaged, but is still habitable, though she will likely pay thousands of dollars in repairs.

GoFundMe pages aren’t the only way money is distributed to earthquake victims, and Humboldt County, Rotary District 5130 has distributed money to residents and businesses. The Rotary Club offers small business recovery grants of up to $2,000.
