An aftershock was recorded following a record earthquake in the Texas area

MIAMI, Texas (KVII) — A small aftershock was recorded Thursday night following the strongest earthquake measured in the Texas Panhandle since at least 1900.

The 1.5-magnitude quake occurred at 11:17 p.m., about 22 miles northwest of Miami, according to the US Geological Survey. It originated about 1.7 miles below the surface. No one reported feeling the aftershock until Friday morning.

The aftershock occurred about 18 hours after a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck the area at 5:21 a.m. Thursday. The main quake was centered about 24 miles northwest of Miami and about 24 miles southeast of Spearman at a depth of about 3.5 miles.

Residents reported that the initial quake was felt across the Texas Panhandle and in parts of Oklahoma. Shaking was reported as far away as Amarillo, Lubbock, Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

USGS records indicate that the magnitude 5.0 quake was the strongest earthquake recorded in the Texas Panhandle since at least 1900, and was only the fourth earthquake of magnitude 4.0 or stronger documented in the region during that period.

Additional aftershocks are possible. Scientists can also identify smaller earthquakes when reviewing seismic data.
