Did an earthquake occur Friday morning in southern Indiana?

If you were in the Bossyville area this morning, there’s a good chance you’ve heard and possibly felt a loud noise or explosion. Social media started blowing up around 9:00 AM Central Time on Friday, January 6, 2023. Residents in the Southern Indiana area reported a powerful explosion that could have been an earthquake or accident of some kind.

We receive phone calls and learn of a loud noise in the Bossy County area. We have received questions from News Media that an earthquake is likely. After checking our official communications, and speaking with Posey EMA officials, we have been unable to identify or confirm any activity in the Evansville area. We checked the USI seismograph, and it shows a very slight report close to the time in question, but the official national data says nothing in our area. We will provide an update if we find any new information.
