Hopkins area earthquake reported by the USGS

RICHLAND COUNTY, South Carolina – Residents of Lower Richland may have felt a slight jolt late Tuesday night. It was an earthquake.

The 1.9-magnitude quake was confirmed Wednesday morning but occurred just before 11:30 p.m. the night before. It refers to the first South Carolina Midlands earthquake in 2023 and, based on the currently reviewed case, deviated significantly from the usual location.

The last 83 earthquakes, which occurred in just over a year, occurred mostly in the communities of Elgin and Lugoff. The latter appears to be concentrated about 9 miles east-northeast of Hopkins near Garners Ferry and RL Coward Road.

However, it should be noted that the location of the epicenter is sometimes modified as more data becomes available. At this point, no USGS residents have reported feeling this likely because most people will not feel earthquakes of less than 2.5 magnitude.
