Miramar marks 13 years since the earthquake that devastated Haiti, and offers continued support to the Haitian community

Miramar – A memorial service was held Thursday at Miramar City Hall to mark the 13th anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti.

The January 12, 2010 earthquake claimed the lives of more than 250,000 Haitians, displaced 5 million people who witnessed their homes destroyed, and nearly 2 million people were forced to live in makeshift camps when the rainy season swept the country weeks later.

The magnitude 7.0 quake left much of Port-au-Prince in ruins.

The event began with a few words from Mayor Wayne Messam who said the city supports the Haitian community and will be there for them. He ended up praying.

Haiti continues to deal with political upheaval and upheaval on top of rebuilding what has been lost. Organized crime groups have been operating almost unchecked since the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise, who himself ruled by decree.

Reginald Delva who survived the earthquake that fateful day. He spoke of his condition in his office as the ground began to shake and spent the days sifting through the rubble, looking for friends.

“It took time for us to understand that the earthquake is the whole capital city. So, we were trying to help each other. We’re trying to find family members, offline,” he said.

He said he and his family had lost loved ones.

He said, “He was not a close family member, but my brother-in-law lost his sister. My uncle lost his wife. But I lost a lot of friends.”

“Seeing someone who survived, seeing that tragedy, just seeing the impact of death and suffering. There were so many amputations that resulted from that earthquake. Seeing someone like him survive and recover is a true testament and reminder of how fragile life is and how natural disasters affect us all.” ”

Some of those who attended the event said more needed to be done to prepare Haiti for natural disasters, including better infrastructure.
