A 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Islamabad, parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

A mild earthquake hit Peshawar and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at around 4:30 pm on Thursday – making it at least the third shockwave in less than a month.

The National Seismological Center (NSMC) reported that tremors were felt in Charsadda, Islamabad and surrounding areas, which measured at 5.6 on the Richter scale, while the depth was 190 km.

The epicenter was 237 kilometers west of Chitral, according to the NSMC.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department also shared details of the earthquake via Twitter saying: “Earthquake originated on 19-01-2023 at 16:30 PST. Mag: 5.6. Depth: 190 km. Latitude: 35.89N: 71.39E. Epicenter : 37 km west of Chitral.

NSMC also reported that two other moderate-magnitude earthquakes were felt 70 kilometers from Bisham in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 28 kilometers south of Kharan.

Immediately after the earthquake, residents of the affected cities took to Twitter to share their experiences, while others rushed in and began to pray for safety.

One user said: “Violent earthquake hits Abbottabad! It lasted for more than 10 seconds.”

Earlier this month on January 5, people felt another earthquake in parts of Pakistan.

The NSMC then reported that the magnitude of the earthquake was recorded at 5.8 on the Richter scale, while the USGS claimed that the magnitude of the earthquake was recorded at 5.5 on the Richter scale.

The effects of the earthquake were also felt in Peshawar, Lower Dir, Chitral, Khyber District, Waziristan, Tank, Bajaur, Mardan, Parachinar, Murree, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Multan, Sheikhupura, Chiniot and Kotli.

Additionally, just a day earlier, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake jolted parts of Punjab at 3:04 pm, NSMC reported.
