Mystery vibrating, rumbling was felt along the Jersey Shore again. No earthquakes have been reported.
For the second time this month, residents across southern New Jersey reported extended periods of shaking inside their homes on Thursday afternoon, with windows and walls shaking. And just like before, no earthquakes have been reported anywhere in the eastern United States.
There were also no thunderstorms reported in or near New Jersey Thursday, but some residents are speculating that the rumble inside their homes — along with some reports of blasting — could be related to military planes and helicopters flying over the Garden State.
Naval Air Station Patuxent River, a U.S. Navy station based in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, issued a noise warning on its Facebook page on Tuesday, saying it will conduct “noise generating test events” between Tuesday and Friday.
“Pilots at NAS Patuxent River will conduct Field Carrier Landing Practices (FCLPs). Simulated carrier landings performed to prepare a pilot to safely land on an aircraft carrier,” the agency said in its Facebook post.
“The practices consist of a series of touch-and-go maneuvers, called ‘bounces.’ Airspeed, altitude and power are all precisely engineered so that the pilot can approach the ship within an acceptable window to land on deck safely.”
“Residents may notice increased noise levels due to these operations,” the publication said.
It was not immediately known how far the noise would be transmitted. But Facebook was flooded with reports of shaking in homes and businesses across South Jersey on Thursday afternoon. The first was around 11 am and the second about 2 hours later.
Several residents indicated that they felt some shaking or heard some loud explosions in the past, but said they never felt the commotion become as intense as on Thursday.
Among the towns or sections of towns where clattering has been reported are Irma, Cape May, Galloway, Middle Township, North Cape May, Rio Grande and Smithville. Some residents said they felt their homes shake but didn’t hear a loud bang, while others said they heard a loud bang.
“My whole house shook. Windows rattle(d), bed moved back and forth. South Jersey weather forecaster ‘Norster Nick’ Bateman wrote on the Facebook page. “I hear jets and I’m in Galway near the airport, but this sounded very different. No arm, just a steady vibration. At first I thought it was the wind, but it got stronger.”
Another Facebook user in Atlantic County said: “In Smithville we just shook for 45-60 seconds with a short pause, but the dogs and cats didn’t like it, this time it was more of a banging or breaking sound we feel at 2pm it was terrible!! “
On Friday, January 13, residents from as far south as Cape May to Manhawken along the coast and as far west as Glassboro in Gloucester County reported feeling shaking in their homes. They said the rattle lasted at least 10 seconds.
The Press of Atlantic City reported at the time that a military supersonic plane was flying a few miles off the coast that day, and could have been the cause of the growl. The Army has a test flight path in the Atlantic Ocean about 3 miles off the east coast, and there will be a sonic boom if the plane is flying fast enough to break the sound barrier.
South Jersey is not alone when it comes to feeling and hearing loud noises. In early January, several people in northern New Jersey and northeastern Pennsylvania reported a loud bang — some describing it as loud as an explosion.
The cause of this boom was not immediately determined.
