A magnitude 5.1 earthquake hits Malta again

People felt a 5.1-magnitude earthquake across the Maltese islands on Monday night in another earthquake south of Malta.

The University of Malta’s Seismic Research and Monitoring Group said the quake occurred at 8:55 p.m. in the same area that has seen several magnitude five quakes since the beginning of the month.

People reported shaking in several places when the earthquake hit.

SMRG recorded another magnitude 4.5 earthquake in the same area south of Malta at 2:02 p.m.

The area, known as Melita Graben, is very active and tremors occur regularly although they are almost not felt. However, there have been several instances over the past month when earthquakes of magnitude 5 have occurred, which can be felt on the islands.
