A 6.4-magnitude earthquake shakes the Turkish-Syrian border

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck the border region between Turkey and Syria on Monday, just two weeks after two powerful earthquakes hit the region and claimed more than 46,000 lives in both countries.

And the Turkish Disaster Management Agency announced that the earthquake occurred at 20:04 local time, and its epicenter was in the Defne district of Hatay province, the same area that was struck earlier this month.

Avad said that several minutes later, a second earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale occurred in the Samandag district of Hatay province, with many aftershocks occurring in different locations in southern Turkey.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said, according to the latest figures, three people were killed and 213 others were injured. Salvage work continued on several buildings.

Turkish news agency IHA reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Minister Soylu were exposed to the earthquake during a visit to the police station in Kahramanmaras.

Rahmi Dogan, the governor of Hatay, said, “We have received some notifications because of the earthquake that occurred in the city, and we are evaluating them. Our checks are continuing.”

Hatay Mayor Lutvu Savas told Turkish channel NTV that there were a number of collapsed buildings following the new quake in the regions of Antakya, Altinuzu, Samandağ and Defne. He said that a bridge in Antakya that was built in the 1990s also collapsed.

Mustafa Kemal Pasha Hospital and Iskenderun Governmental Hospital in Antakya were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay stated that a tsunami warning that had been implemented earlier had been lifted.

Many buildings already damaged in previous earthquakes sustained further damage. Reuters quoted a spokesman for the White Helmets as saying that in northwest Syria, there were no reports of new buildings collapsing due to the earthquake.

Reuters also reported many casualties as a result of people running quickly from buildings, some jumping off buildings.

People felt the earthquake as far away as Syria, Egypt, Cyprus and Lebanon.
