The death toll in Turkey and Syria from Monday’s new strong earthquake, two weeks after devastating earthquakes killed nearly 45,000 people in the same region, had risen to eight by Tuesday, authorities and media said. Hatay was one of the hardest hit provinces in Turkey as the 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck on February 6. Thousands of buildings were destroyed in the province, and an earthquake on Monday destroyed buildings. The governor’s office in Antakya, the historic heart of Hatay, was also damaged.

Al-Watan daily reported that a girl was killed in the government-held western town of Safita, while a woman died in the central Syrian city of Hama, which was already affected by the February 6 earthquake. The civil defense organization in northwestern Syria, the White Helmets, said that about 190 people sustained various injuries in opposition-held northwestern Syria, most of them cases or broken bones and bruises. She said that several dilapidated buildings collapsed, adding that there were no cases of people getting stuck under the rubble.
