JINDIRES, Syria – A baby who was born in the rubble of her family’s earthquake-damaged home has left the hospital and gone to her new home, where she was with her aunt’s family on Monday.

The girl had been in the hospital for hours after the February 6 earthquake. She was released from the hospital on Saturday and her aunt and uncle adopted her and gave her a new name, Ofra, after her late mother.

Ofra’s mother died in the earthquake along with her father and four siblings. A day after the infant’s arrival at the hospital, officials there named her baby girl Aya – Arabic for “a sign of God.”

Ofra’s story has been widely shared in news reports and people around the world have offered to help her, with some saying they’d like to adopt her. However, the relatives who took her in said that no matter how difficult their circumstances, the best place for an infant is with the family.

And her uncle, Khalil Al-Sawadi, who now lives with relatives in the town of Jenderes in northern Syria, was caring for Afra, after his house was destroyed in the earthquake. Al-Sawadi and his wife have four daughters and two sons, and now Afra will live with her cousins.

Al-Sawadi, who is also a cousin of the newborn’s parents, told The Associated Press Monday as he squatted, holding Afra and surrounded by his six children. “She will be more precious than my children because she will preserve the memories of her father and her brothers and sisters.”

He added that days after the birth of Afra, his wife gave birth to a daughter, Ataa.

While in the hospital in the neighboring town of Afrin, Afra was breastfed by the director’s wife.

The judicial officials in Afrin had taken over the case of Afra after the girl drew international attention, and some people came to the hospital claiming that they were related to her, despite the different names of their families from Afra and her mother.

For several days, Al-Sawadi was afraid that someone would kidnap her, and he visited her often in the hospital.

A hospital official said that Ofra was handed over to her aunt’s family days after a DNA test was taken to confirm that the girl and her aunt were biologically related.

“He was sad and some of the nurses cried,” said Dr. Hani Maarouf, who has looked after Afra since she was taken to hospital. He added that the child was in very good health when she was released.

Rescue workers in Jenderes discovered the dark-haired girl more than 10 hours after the earthquake as they were digging through the rubble of the five-storey apartment building where her parents lived.

Al-Sawadi recounted how he rushed out of his house when the earthquake struck and found that the neighboring building in which the Ofra family lived had been reduced to a pile of rubble. Al-Sawadi, along with others from the area, said they dug through the rubble in the pouring rain for hours until he got tired and sat down to rest nearby.

Shortly after that, someone calls him to identify a dead woman they found under the rubble. He told the people around her that she was the daughter of his cousin, Ofra. Then they began to hear a baby crying and removed the sand that was covering the baby, whose umbilical cord was still attached to its mother.

Al-Sawadi said he took a razor blade from his umbilical cord, cut the umbilical cord, handed the girl to another cousin, and they took her to a nearby hospital where he was told the girl was in good health. They went to another hospital in the nearby town of Afrin, where they were told it was full and unable to take any more patients. They continued to a second hospital, which was also full, before reaching Children’s Hospital where I remained until Saturday.

He said during the chaos after they pulled Afra from the rubble, Al-Sawadi thought the baby was born and told the doctor to name him after her late father Abdullah Turki Mleihan. They later find out that it was a girl.

He said the girl remained in the hospital for nearly two weeks while the paperwork for her adoption was completed.

The devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in southeastern Turkey’s Kharmanmaras province occurred in the early hours of February 6, followed by multiple aftershocks. Many communities in southeastern Turkey and northern Syria have been reduced to piles of broken concrete and twisted metal. More than 44,000 people have been reported killed, and the death toll is expected to rise as search teams find more bodies.

The earthquake destroyed dozens of housing units in the town of Jenderes, where the Ofra family has lived since 2018.

Saleh Al-Badran, the uncle of Afra’s father, said earlier this month that Afra’s father, Abdullah Turki Mleihan, hails from the village of Khasham in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor, but left in 2014 after the Islamic State group captured the village. .
