A hospital official said that Ofra was handed over to her aunt’s family days after a DNA test was taken to confirm that the girl and her aunt were biologically related.

“He was sad and some of the nurses cried” when she was taken from the hospital, said Dr. Hani Maarouf, who has been caring for Afra since she was taken to the hospital.

He added that the child was in very good health when she was released.

Rescue workers in Jenderes discovered the dark-haired girl more than 10 hours after the earthquake as they were digging through the rubble of the five-storey apartment building where her parents lived.

Al-Sawadi, along with others from the area, said they dug through the rubble in the pouring rain for hours until he got tired and sat down to rest nearby.

Shortly after that, someone calls him to identify a dead woman they found under the rubble.

He told the people that she was the daughter of his uncle, Ofra. Then they began to hear a baby crying and removed the sand that was covering the baby, whose umbilical cord was still attached to its mother’s.

Mr. Al-Sawadi said he took a blade from his pocket and cut the umbilical cord and handed the girl over to another cousin.

They then took her to a nearby hospital, where he was told the girl was in good health.

They headed to another hospital in the nearby town of Afrin, which was full and unable to take any more patients.
