Turkish football fans play toss for earthquake survivors

Football fans in Istanbul flooded the stadium on February 26 with plush toys for children who survived the two devastating earthquakes that struck earlier this month. After 4 minutes and 17 seconds, the game was paused for donations in memory of the first earthquake, which struck at 4:17 am.

Videos of the ‘This game is yours’ event – which took place during a match between Besiktas and Antalyaspor at the former Vodafone Park – showed fans bathing the field with bears, plush dogs and at least one monkey attached to a message that appeared to be handwritten by a child.

More than 44,000 people have been confirmed dead in the aftermath of two earthquakes on February 6, measuring 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale, in the southeastern city of Kahramanmaraş, according to the Turkish Interior Ministry’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority. More than 5,000 people have also been killed in Syria, according to Reuters.

During the match, there was also a reminder that many Turks are critical of the government’s response to the disaster, with some fans chanting “the government resigns,” CNN reported. Quake survivors told TIME that the government had sent in insufficient emergency teams, which delayed rescue operations from the rubble. Meanwhile, the government worked to curb dissent in the aftermath of the disaster, blocking Twitter for 12 hours and arresting people who criticized the government.

Turkey’s Justice Ministry has announced the investigation of 134 people allegedly responsible for building collapses in the earthquakes, including contractors, though others have argued there is a shared responsibility across government for fostering a corrupt system.
