Wimbledon: can Arthur Fery keep winning? Jamie Murray and Jamie Delgado are not surprised by the rise of the British tennis star | Tennis news

Former doubles specialist Jamie Murray and coach Jamie Delgado are not surprised by the rise of British tennis star Arthur Fery – but can the ‘clumsy’ 6ft 7in player overcome a persistent nosebleed problem and continue winning at Wimbledon?

Fery provided a day full of English sporting heroes on Monday after improbably becoming the first home wildcard to reach the quarter-finals.

The 23-year-old entered the tournament ranked 114th, with just two Grand Slam wins to his name and had never won a five-set match.

Who is British tennis star Arthur Fery?

Born in Sevres, France, Fery grew up in London and attended King’s College School in Wimbledon.

Tennis is in his blood. Fery’s mother, Olivia Fery (née Gravereaux), was a former WTA Tour player and played in the French Open in the early 1990s.

His father, Loic Fery, is the current president of FC Lorient, which plays in the French Ligue 1.

Fery attended Stanford University, where he majored in Science, Technology and Society, and also became one of the best tennis players in the country.

Fery played main draw doubles at Wimbledon in 2021 and 2022 before winning his first main draw match at Wimbledon in 2025 and then sealing his first Challenger singles title in Barranquilla.

The 23-year-old qualified for the Miami Open and reached the semi-finals of the Zagreb Challenger before the start of the grass-court season, reaching the semi-finals at the Birmingham Open and then securing his first ATP 500 quarter-final at Queen’s Club.

Fery is coached by Benoit Foucher and Jeroen Benard.

Now he has won two in a row, both from seemingly hopeless positions. after beating former semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov 7-5 3-6 4-6 6-4 7-6 (10-7).

After recovering from a 4-1 deficit in both the fourth and fifth sets against Zizou Bergs on Saturday, Fery once again showed his resilience. He fought back from two breaks in the fourth to set up a clash with ninth seed Flavio Cobolli, whom he defeated at the Australian Open.

After all the doom and gloom surrounding British tennis at the start of the fortnight, Fery’s run was quite a plot twist, and the Center Court crowd roared for their new hero.

‘Fery really plays grass tennis’

Seven-time major doubles champion Jamie Murray is quite impressed with Fery’s performance.

“He is someone who really plays grass tennis, comes forward and knows how to play at the net, how to move at the net and also his composure. He has an inner confidence in himself and I didn’t think he was worried about going to Center Court,” said the former doubles world number 1.

“He performed so well from start to finish and remained calm all the time, while the experienced Dimitrov was the one who blinked every now and then. He should be so proud of himself.

“Fery plays the right way with good touch and good court awareness. He gets ahead very quickly when he sees his opponents are off balance, which not many players can do. Some don’t feel as comfortable playing at the net, but he has great hand skills, his ability to improvise and he moves as well as anyone still in the draw.

“He is definitely a tough player for guys to play against and hopefully he recovers well because he has played back-to-back five-set matches, which will be the first time in his career that he would have done that.”

Fery’s progress has been hampered by injuries, including bruises to his arm, but Murray believes the Briton is a top 100 player.

He said: “A lot of people in British tennis believed in him a lot. What’s held him back is his body and injuries, but that’s been going on for a long time. His level is top 100 and he’s well inside that now.

“He now knows that he will be participating in all the major tournaments in the next six months to a year.”

The 23-year-old Wimbledon will try to become only the fifth British man to reach the semi-finals here, after Roger Taylor, Tim Henman, Sir Andy Murray and Cameron Norrie. But is he ready for the spotlight?

Murray said: “He has an inner confidence in himself and a belief in himself that he is a good player and that he can do damage on tour. I don’t see why he wouldn’t have a really good career on tour.”

“He will have a good career because he is a good tennis player and he is different from many other players. That is a big advantage.”

Did you know…

Fery is the first player outside the top 100 to reach the last eight of the men’s singles at Wimbledon since number 144 Nick Kyrgios in 2014.

He is currently ranked number 63 in the world in the ATP Live Rankings.

Fery turns 24 on the day of the men’s final – July 12.

The last wildcard to win a Grand Slam title was Goran Ivanisevic at Wimbledon in 2001 – 25 years ago.

‘I am not surprised by his level of play’

Jamie Delgado, Dimitrov’s coach, also spoke positively about Fery’s future, saying: “I know Arthur quite well, so I knew that he had been winning matches lately and that he is a talented player. He has had quite a few injuries in recent years, so he has not been able to organize a series of events and get his ranking up, but I always thought he was a very good player and that he could climb the rankings.”

“Did I think he would reach the quarter-finals here? Probably not, but he is certainly someone who can win matches at tour level and is capable of very good tennis.”

“He moves exceptionally well. The stats show he’s the best at retrieving balls and staying in the point, so he’s great at that. When you’re at that height you have to be extremely talented and you have to be able to hit the ball at different heights and mix the pace well, but I’m not surprised by his level of play.”
