Pope Francis sends 10,000 medical kits to earthquake victims in Türkiye

The Department of Charitable Service, headed by Polish Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, has sent more than 10,000 medical kits to Turkey on behalf of Pope Francis, according to a statement released by the department on March 28, 2023. This aid aims to support those in need. Affected by the earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey on 6 February. Since then, numerous aftershocks have occurred and nearly 50,000 people have died.

The medicines were delivered over the past two days by two planes, in cooperation with the Turkish Embassy to the Holy See. The Holy See had already provided immediate relief in the aftermath of the tragedy by sending canned food, nappies and other badly needed items.

In late February, some 10,000 thermal shirts were sent for distribution between Turkey and Syria to help the population weather the cold winter. A shipment of three medical pallets was also dispatched on February 23.

In addition to the more than 45,000 officially recorded deaths, the February 6 earthquake displaced nearly two million people in Turkey. Cities such as Antakya (Antakya) were hit particularly hard, with Christian heritage sites taking a heavy toll.
