A documentary about the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923 revealed the first “disaster footage” of Japan

With this year marking the 100th anniversary of the Great Kantō Earthquake, a documentary is being produced focusing on three photographers who captured raw, confrontational footage from Tokyo in the immediate aftermath of the 1923 disaster.

Filmed at a time when photography was relatively rare, the motion pictures captured by the three are an invaluable historical record as they provide insight into the disaster response of the time while showing the spreading fires and the population’s reactions amidst the chaos.

The documentary, “Men with Cameras: Filming the Great Kantō Earthquake,” expected to be shown this summer, is produced by the Documentary Preservation Center in Tokyo.
