A 5.5 magnitude earthquake strikes central Peru, leaving 5 dead and hundreds injured

SICAIA, Peru – A powerful earthquake shook Peru’s Andean region overnight, killing at least five people and displacing hundreds, officials said.

Homes and a church collapsed due to the 5.5 magnitude quake, and an unknown number of people remain missing, Fox News Digital reported.

The quake occurred around 9:20 p.m., and occurred at a depth of about 6.2 miles about a mile from Sicaia, which is located in central Peru, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Peru’s National Civil Defense Institute said more than 20 people were injured and at least 300 residents were forced to leave their homes.

Officials are still trying to identify missing residents after several buildings collapsed or were left unsafe, including a local church and a monastery, according to FOX News Digital.

Authorities said the widespread use of traditional mud-brick construction was likely to exacerbate the damage. Luis Vasquez, head of the local civil defense office, said rural construction materials “contributed to greater impact and damage,” Fox News Digital reported.

Vibrations from the earthquake were reported across the country, including Lima, the country’s capital.

Peru is located in the middle of the Pacific Ring of Fire, which has seen a lot of earthquakes recently.
