More than 1,700 people reported an earthquake around upstate New York

ADAMS CENTER, New York – More than 1,700 people reported feeling an earthquake that shook parts of upstate New York Sunday afternoon, the US Geological Survey said.

People in 298 ZIP codes and 16 cities — mostly in northern and central New York — reported feeling the quake, according to a USGS report Monday.

The 3.6-magnitude quake struck at about 2:10 p.m. and had its epicenter four miles from Adams in Jefferson County, according to the USGS.

The Geological Survey map categorized how people experienced weak to moderate shaking and damage by area. Moderate reports are considered very light.

Most of the reports came from the Adams Center, Adams, and Watertown.

No major damage was reported.

In total, 1,734 people reported feeling shaky, according to the report.

The earthquake was much stronger than one felt earlier this month.

A 2.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Adams Center area at approximately 1:30 a.m. on April 14. The Geological Survey reported that only 72 people said they felt the quake.
