7.3-magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia, tsunami warning lifted

JAKARTA (Reuters) – A 7.3-magnitude earthquake jolted west of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Tuesday, Indonesia’s geophysical agency said, prompting a tsunami warning for about two hours.

Since then, the tsunami warning, which requires local authorities to immediately instruct residents of the affected area to stay away from beaches, has been lifted.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) had earlier estimated the earthquake to be a magnitude of 6.9.

The quake occurred at a depth of 84 kilometers at 3 am local time (2000 GMT). BMKG data showed that a number of aftershocks were detected later, and one recorded 5 magnitude.

Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency said authorities are collecting data from the islands closest to the epicenter off the western coast of Sumatra, said ministry spokesman Abdul Mahari.

Abdul, who was in Padang, said the earthquake was strongly felt in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, and some people moved away from the beaches.

“People left their homes. Some were terrified but under control. Some are currently evacuating away from the sea,” he said, adding that he had not seen any damage so far.

Local news footage showed some Padang residents being evacuated by motorbike and on foot to higher ground. Some carried backpacks while others huddled under an umbrella against the rain.

“On Siberut Island, people have already been evacuated. They are told to stay in the evacuation zone until the tsunami warning is lifted,” a local official told TvOne.

Indonesia suffers from frequent earthquakes because it straddles the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active area where different layers of the Earth’s crust meet.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
