Sparta, JA. – Some people living in central Georgia woke up suddenly in the middle of the night after a small earthquake shook the ground.

The small town of Sparta, Georgia, 90 miles southeast of metro Atlanta, was the epicenter of that small but surprising earthquake.

The US Geological Survey said it recorded a 2.5-magnitude earthquake when it shook the rural community just before 2:30 a.m. Monday.

It reached depths of nearly seven miles below the Earth’s surface.

While a number of people in the area reported feeling tremors, there were no reports of damage or aftershocks.

After all, a 2.5 earthquake is on the weaker end of the spectrum.

However, this region is no stranger to earthquakes. In September, another 2.5-magnitude earthquake struck Jackson, Georgia.

Some researchers suggest that changing water levels in nearby Lake Sinclair may be the cause of this seismic activity.
