The Minister of Health honors the humanitarian team for relief efforts from the Türkiye earthquake

TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA – Health Minister Budi Gunade Sadkin hands out an award to the Type 2 Emergency Medical Team (EMT) who were dispatched to earthquake-stricken areas in Turkey in February 2023. The award recognizes the humanitarian efforts of 105 EMTs. and support staff.

The humanitarian team is composed of members from state ministries and institutions, the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), and NGOs affiliated with the country’s health reserve personnel.

The team departed from Indonesia for Turkey after the country sent a request for an emergency medical team to the Indonesian government. To answer the call, Indonesia – like other countries – has dispatched a number of specialist doctors, general practitioners, nurses, pharmacists and public kitchen workers to provide assistance with health services in the disaster-affected areas.

More than 141,000 people around the world have gathered to provide humanitarian aid from 94 countries.

Two highly destructive earthquakes hit the southern and central parts of Turkey, with an initial magnitude of 7.8 and a magnitude 7.7 earthquake followed.

These two major earthquakes caused widespread devastation in Turkey and Syria killing an estimated 57,000 people and injuring more than 130,000. Experts have even called the tragedy one of the deadliest earthquakes of the 21st century.
