Tsunami warning after the South Pacific earthquake

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the South Pacific Ocean on Friday, prompting tsunami warnings for a number of Pacific island nations.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s tsunami warning system reported that waves as high as three feet could hit Vanuatu. Authorities in Vanuatu, the island nation of about 300,000 people, have urged people in coastal areas to move to higher ground.

The quake struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands in the French territory of New Caledonia at around 2pm local time on Friday.

The US agency issued a tsunami warning for coasts located 600 miles from the epicenter, including Vanuatu. It said waves as high as one foot could hit the coasts of New Caledonia as well as Fiji, Kiribati, Australia and New Zealand.

The agency initially said waves of up to 10 feet were possible for Vanuatu, and up to three feet for other countries in the region, but later lowered its estimate.

New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency said it expected coastal areas of the country to see “strong, unusual currents and unexpected beach surges” and urged people along the northeastern shore to stay away from beaches, ports and rivers.
