A 7.1-magnitude earthquake occurred southeast of the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia, at approximately 12:51 a.m. on May 20. Dangerous waves are possible for coastal locations up to 300 km (186 mi) from the epicenter. Tsunami waves less than 0.3 m (1 ft) above tide level are possible along the coasts of Fiji, Kiribati, Vanuatu and Alice and Futuna. The earthquake follows a strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake that occurred southeast of the Loyalty Islands, in New Caledonia, at around 13:57 GMT on May 19.
