A new study looks at the locations with the highest potential for earthquakes. Many of them are in big cities. Among them are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Salt Lake City, and Memphis. This is according to government research conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

As it turns out, coastal counties in Southern California and the Bay Area are the most costly when it comes to earthquake damage. “Los Angeles County with annual losses of $2.68 billion is three times greater than the second highest county (Santa Clara, CA),” the FEMA report states. “Counties containing the Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake, and Memphis metropolitan areas also have relatively high levels of AELs.”

North Carolina ranks No. 22 and No. 28, respectively, among the states for the “Ranking of States by Annual Earthquake Losses and Annual Earthquake Loss Ratios (AELR)” report. South Carolina ranks 8th and 12th, respectively.
