A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hits the border area between Panama and Colombia

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Darien Bay near the border between Panama and Colombia on Wednesday night, the US Geological Survey said, followed by a 4.9 aftershock just ten minutes after the first tremor.

No injuries or damages were reported in nearby areas as the quake site is not densely populated.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was about 41 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Puerto Ubaldia, Panama, while both quakes occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).

The Panama Civil Defense Agency wrote on Twitter that the quake was felt in the provinces of Darien, Panama, Guna Yala and western Panama.

“There is no report on the effects,” the agency said.

The National Emergency Operations Center in Panama later ruled out the possibility of a tsunami.

The earthquake was felt in some parts of the capital of Panama, as residents of the Colombian cities of Medellin and Cali felt tremors.

The area affected by the earthquake is home to the Darien Gap, an area of ​​dense, sparse forest, a major overland route for migrants heading north from South America. Hundreds of thousands of immigrants have passed through in recent years.
