Japan has expanded its natural disaster preparations to include vending machines, which will provide free food and drink in the event of an earthquake or typhoon.

Two devices have been installed in the western coastal city of Ako, located in an area that seismologists say is prone to a powerful earthquake that is expected to hit the central and southwestern Pacific Ocean in the next few decades.

The machines, which hold about 300 bottles and cans of soft drinks and 150 emergency food items, including nutritional supplements, have been installed near buildings designated as evacuation shelters.

It is designed to “open” and make its contents freely available in the event of a heavy rain warning, or an evacuation order, after an earthquake measuring five or higher on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of seven, according to the Mainichi Shimbun.

The newspaper added that the rest of the time must be paid for its contents.

The manufacturer, EarthCorp, which has a factory in the city, says the machines are the first of their kind in Japan, one of the world’s most seismically active countries, where increasingly powerful typhoons have caused widespread flooding and landslides in recent years.

We’d like to install [the machines] across the country,” a company representative told the Mainichi newspaper.

“We expect the warehouse to lead to the safety and security of our residents,” said a city official.

In another step, a vending machine with a radio that automatically issues emergency broadcasts was set up in a park in Tokyo earlier this year.

Media reports said the radio will be activated by earthquakes measuring 5 or higher on the Japanese intensity scale, and broadcasts of evacuation and other vital information from a local radio station.

Experts recently raised the possibility of a “massive earthquake” occurring along the Nankai Basin, off Japan’s Pacific coast, within the next 20 years from 50% to 60%, and about 90% within the next 40 years.
